Expiration Dates
Different pens and insulin have different lengths of time they may be used. Teach the patient to follow the instructions that come with the prescription and discard the pen after that length of time, even if there is insulin remaining. Using an insulin pen beyond the recommended date may be less effective and result in erratic blood sugar readings.
